• Geriatric dentistry is delivery of dental care to older adults involving diagnosis,prevention,management and treatment of problem associated with age related diseases
• The mouth is referred to as a mirror of overall health, reinforcing that oral health is an integral part of general health
• As we get older, we enter a second round of cavity prone years. One common cause of cavities in older adults is dry mouth. Many older adults have gum, or periodontal disease, caused by the bacteria in plaque, which irritate the gums, making them swollen, red and more likely to bleed.
• Advanced gum disease can eventually destroy the gums, bone and ligaments supporting the teeth leading to tooth loss.
• Oral cancer is also common in patients with smoking and tobacco chewing habits.
• Older adults are more susceptible to oral conditions or diseases due to an increase in chronic conditions and physical/mental disabilities.
